Music Programs

Choir

The primary goal of the UUCLB Choir is to have fun.

The Choir is composed of amateur music-lovers who get together on Wednesday nights to sing a variety of music. Classical selections, pop songs, jazz tunes, folk music and spirituals are all in the repertoire. No audition or musical experience is required, just a love of singing. We sing practically every Sunday, and provide special music for special occasions and holidays. We participate in an annual regional choir festival and carol in December, and we start off each season with a Labor Day weekend retreat. The choir does not sing in July and August.

Choir practice is at 7:30 pm on Wednesday evenings in Wylder Hall, and we meet at 9:30 am on Sunday mornings for warmups. For more information call Jim Ruggirello, Director of Music at 562.597.8445 or classicaljim@aol.co

Long Beach Mozart Festival

Founded at UUCLB, the Long Beach Mozart Festival celebrated its 34th year in 2006, the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Since its inception, the Festival has grown to become a community-wide volunteer organization sponsored by a number of Long Beach churches. The mission of the Festival is to encourage the study and appreciation of classical music in general and that of Mozart in particular, and to offer performance opportunities to outstanding young vocal and instrumental musicians from Southern California. Activities include three young artist competitions, free community musical events and two fundraising events. The Long Beach Mozart Festival receives support from the California Arts Council, but is primarily funded by individual contributions. For more information see the Mozart festival web site http://longbeachmozartfestival.org or contact Sam Warner at 562 498-1346 or samuel.warner@verizon.net

Music and Movement

Music and Movement is an ongoing educational music experience program for children ages four to nine. There are separate classes for each age group.

It is a multidisciplinary program that combines elements of Orff-Schulwerk and Kodaly methods with traditional philosophies of music education. It combines singing, playing, listening, moving and creating to encourage musical, social, emotional and physical development.

There is a fee associated with this program, and scholarships are available to UUCLB members.

For additional information please call Danuta Kilmczak at 562.494.1529.
